Program costs vary based on the length of time, study abroad site and number of credits. Specific costs for each program are available on the program website. If your study abroad is for credit, you may use UW-Madison financial aid to help pay for not only those credits, but also program expenses.
CALS Study Abroad Scholarships
CALS International Programs Office has scholarships available for CALS students participating in a CALS sponsored study abroad program. Scholarship awards are made every year in October and March.

Federal Financial Aid
Students who study abroad on UW-Madison programs can use all but work-study funds received through the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Students complete the FAFSA as normal. The CALS study abroad office reports the total cost of the program and the list of students attending to UW-Madison’s Financial Aid Office. Student financial aid packages are reviewed based on the new costs of the study abroad program. If eligible, the increased study abroad costs may result in an increased award. Some examples of grants and scholarships offered through FAFSA that can be used for study abroad are:
- Pell Grants
- Perkins Loans
- Stafford Loans
- Vilas Grants
- Equal Opportunity Grants
- WI Higher Education Grants
- Lawton Minority Grants
